Guidelines for admission of college/university students for pursuing project/dissertation work at CSIR-Central Electrochemical Research Institute, Karaikudi
Objectives:
Dissertation/project work should be productive, and of good quality and merit. It should help students not only improve their subject knowledge and experimental skills as well as communication and report-making skills. It should also enhance aptitude for research and assist career growth.
Areas of Research:
Candidates will be allowed to carry out studies only in areas that are aligned with the on-going activities at the institute. Candidates desirous of pursuing joining the program are required to submit a one-page write-up describing their proposed work and why CECRI was chosen for the study.
Subjects:
Normally, students pursuing MSc/MPhil/ME/MTech (Chemistry; Physics; Nanoscience & Technology; Materials Science; Chemical/Structural/Environmental Engineering) are encouraged to apply for this program. BE/BTech students and those from other disciplines need not apply.
Eligibility:
To be eligible, applicants should have maintained consistently good academic record (70% and above for general category; 65% and above for OBC/MBC/DNC/BC; 60% and above for SC/ST candidates) in all their papers. Preference will be given to students with national-level fellowship/stipends. Students with arrears and those reappearing in a subsequent semester examination will not be considered. Mere fulfilling of eligibility criteria is no guarantee or selection.
Duration of study and attendance:
Students admitted will be required to work fulltime at CSIR-CECRI for a minimum period of (a) 60 working days for MSc and (b) 125 working days for MPhil/ME/MTech. However, if dissertation work is part of ME/MTech curriculum, the minimum number of working days is fixed at 255. Preference will be given to those who wish to work for an entire semester/year. Regular and minimum attendance is mandatory for each category.
Students selected for MSc projects must present one divisional seminar on his/her project work on concluding the study; those selected for MPhil/ME/MTech projects must give two divisional seminars—first, upon initiation and the second, upon completion of the study. Attendance at seminars is also mandatory for issuing project completion certificate.
Selection:
Intake of students under this program will be made twice a year (March/November). The last dates for receipt of applications at CSIR-CECRI are March 15 and November 15. No application will be entertained after the last date. Selected candidates will be duly informed through their institutions during the fourth week of the corresponding month. Upon intimation, candidates must submit a declaration of acceptance duly endorsed by the head of their institution.
Criteria for selection include academic accomplishments primarily and availability of slots with scientists for accommodating additional candidates. CECRI believes in providing this service to more institutions rather than to more students. We consider the students as ambassadors of their institutions and hence they should conduct themselves in an exemplary manner. They will be governed by the rules of CSIR-CECRI prevailing at that point of time. Any action in case of indiscipline/untoward incident in the campus will be as per decisions by CSIR-CECRI administration.
