Corrosion & Material Protection Overview

Overview

Corrosion is a naturally occurring phenomena that degrade a material due to its interaction with the environment. For example, rust is the result of corrosion that forms on the surface of iron when it comes into contact with the atmosphere. Corrosion is a slow killer that destroys the stability of a material and we can see it in all walks of life. The department of corrosion works towards the understanding of various aspects of corrosion and come up with a variety of mitigating solutions. We concentrate on a wide array of interesting phenomena like structure and failure analysis (which deals with the strength and failure of materials), biological corrosion and related processes, studies of concrete structures and how corrosion happens in them, paints and coatings that are used for protecting a surface against corrosion and cathodic protection which deals with introducing new materials to circumvent corrosion

Corrosion & Materials Protection (CMP) has been identified as a thrust area by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) due to the enormous importance its impact carries in the industrial sector and CECRI takes a lead role in research in this area which has led to the development of a number of anti-corrosion products and processes. The R&D of CMP division is diffused into the fields of biological corrosion, cathodic protection, paints and coatings, concrete corrosion and failure analysis. Each of these fields investigates specialized pathways and control measures of corrosion.

For the first time in India, our experts have pioneered several instrumentation designs, techniques, and sensors for monitoring the health of bridges and structures at various parts of the country. Our research spans through a wide variety of corrosion problems including the monitoring of the health of nuclear reactors, development of corrosion resistant concrete, novel cathodic and anodic inhibitors, protection for concrete sensitive rebars etc. We have developed special protective superhydrophobic paints, self-healing coatings and a variety of improvements in primer technologies. Cathodic protection of marine and underground structures are an active field of research where significant technologies have been completed and transferred to various industries.

The division has spent a considerable amount of work on updating the corrosion map of India. Such a layout offers a ready reference to private and public sectors for understanding the atmospheric corrosion intensity across several coastal cities in the country.

The CMP division carries out corrosion auditing and consulting for several firms in order to minimize the cost of corrosion.

As we move towards a more technology-driven society, our awareness of corrosion-related phenomena also keeps increasing. With all the readily available instrumentation and methodologies, we continue to grow in the understanding of corrosion and hope to create an awareness that cognizes the pathways of corrosion that is monetarily beneficial, intellectually rewarding and communally congregated, while at the same time wonder at the infinitesimal science that happens on the atomic scale."
